Tinubu appoints Tanimu Yakubu as new budget office DG… here’s all to know about him
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Mr. Tanimu Yakubu as the new Director-General of the Budget Office of the Federation.
This was made known on June 13, 2024, in a press statement by Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity.
As stated by Ngelale, the President requires the new Director-General to “further enhance the provision of efficient and qualitative budget functions, with a view to promoting fiscal sustainability, transparency, and accountability in public finance management for national development.”
Yakubu’s appointment follows the expiration of Mr. Ben Akabueze’s tenure. Akabueze was appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari as Special Adviser Planning (SAP) to the President on February 15, 2016, and later appointed as DG Budget on June 10, 2016. His appointment was renewed by Buhari in 2020.

Yakubu, an accomplished economist, was the Chief Economic Adviser to President Umaru Yar’adua and also served as the Deputy Chief of Staff at the time, as well as a member of the National Economic Management Team from 2007 to 2010.
He was Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria from 2003 to 2007, and Commissioner of Finance, Budget, and Economic Planning in Katsina State from 1999 to 2003.
“The new Director-General of the Budget Office of the Federation holds a Master of Business Administration degree in Finance from Wagner College, Staten Island, New York, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from the same institution,” Ngelale stated.
In 2015, he was appointed as a non-executive director of Oando PLC.
Yakubu was born in Kurfi, Katsina State, on Sunday, the 30th of April, 1961.
