The South African government has called for calm and restraint in Madagascar following two weeks of protests in the capital, Antananarivo, that have resulted in tragic loss of life and widespread property destruction. In a statement issued by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) on Sunday, October 12, 2025, the Government of the Republic of South Africa expressed deep concern over the recent political developments in the island nation, emphasizing the need for all parties to prioritize peace and democratic processes.

The protests, which have gripped Antananarivo, stem from escalating tensions over governance and constitutional issues, leading to violent clashes that have claimed lives and caused significant damage to infrastructure. DIRCO’s statement highlighted the humanitarian toll of the unrest, urging all actors to refrain from actions that could further inflame the situation or exacerbate the crisis. “All parties are urged to respect the democratic process and constitutional order,” the department stated, stressing that disputes should be resolved through peaceful means, inclusive dialogue, cooperation, and established legal mechanisms.

South Africa reiterated its firm stance against unconstitutional changes of government, in line with the Lomé Declaration, and noted that regional conflict resolution mechanisms remain available to mediate a way forward. International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola reaffirmed Pretoria’s commitment to supporting a peaceful resolution that upholds the principles of democracy, the rule of law, and sustainable development for the region. The statement concluded by underscoring South Africa’s solidarity with efforts to restore stability in Madagascar.
