The Bafana Bafana of South Africa have secured their first FIFA World Cup qualification in 16 years after a dominant 3-0 win against Rwanda in the final round of the CAF Group C qualifiers at Mbombela Stadium. The victory, watched by a raucous crowd of over 30,000, propelled the hosts to 18 points, edging out Nigeria on goal difference and confirming their spot at the 2026 tournament in North America.
In a match that carried the weight of national expectations, South Africa coach Hugo Broos named a potent lineup featuring captain Ronwen Williams in goal and attackers Thalente Mbatha and Oswin Appollis from the outset. Rwanda, sitting third in the group with 11 points, arrived unbeaten in their last three outings but struggled against the home side’s intensity. The result avenged a 2-0 loss to Rwanda in the reverse fixture last year and marked Bafana Bafana’s fourth clean sheet in their last five qualifiers.
The game kicked off at a blistering pace, with South Africa asserting dominance early. Just five minutes in, midfielder Thalente Mbatha unleashed a stunning strike from 25 yards, curling the ball into the top corner past helpless Rwanda goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari. The goal sent the Mbombela faithful into raptures and set the tone for a one-sided first half, where the hosts controlled 75% of possession and peppered the visitors’ defense with four shots on target.
Rwanda, coached by Torsten Spittler, attempted to steady the ship with counter-attacks led by forward Cedric Mugabo, but their efforts yielded little. In the 26th minute, Appollis doubled the lead with a moment of individual brilliance, cutting inside from the right flank before rifling a low shot into the far corner, his second attempt after the first was blocked. The winger’s clinical finish highlighted South Africa’s superior quality, leaving the Amavubi chasing shadows as the half-time whistle approached with the score at 2-0.
The second period saw Rwanda push forward in search of a lifeline, introducing substitutes like midfielder Djihad Bizimana to inject energy. However, Bafana Bafana’s defense, anchored by Williams, who equaled Itumeleng Khune’s record for most World Cup qualifier appearances by a South African keeper, remained unbreached. A tense moment arrived in the 72nd minute when Sphelele Mkhulise’s pull-back found Sphelele Mbule in the box, but Ntwari’s sharp save kept the deficit at two.
Vuctory was sealed in the 78th minute when Evidence Makgopa rose highest to head home Appollis’s pinpoint cross at the near post, notching his first international goal and sparking wild celebrations. The striker’s stooping header proved the final nail, as Rwanda managed just one shot on goal across 90 minutes. Rwanda’s Spittler lamented missed opportunities but congratulated the winners, focusing on future cycles.South Africa’s qualification ends a drought since their last appearance in 2010, injecting optimism ahead of the finals draw. Rwanda, despite the defeat, finishes respectably and eyes the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
