Six dead, including police Officer, in Midtown Manhattan office shooting — what to know

NYPD officers respond to a deadly shooting at a Midtown Manhattan office building housing major firms including Blackstone and the NFL, July 28, 2025.

At least six people were killed and several others injured on Monday when a gunman opened fire inside a high-rise office building in Midtown Manhattan that houses major firms including the Blackstone investment group and the NFL headquarters.

According to law enforcement sources, the gunman—armed with a rifle—entered the lobby of the building at 345 Park Avenue near East 52nd Street and began shooting. The violence quickly spread to other floors. The attacker later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the 33rd floor.

Among the victims were two police officers—one of whom, an off-duty officer working security at the building, was fatally shot. Four civilians also lost their lives in the attack. Surveillance footage later surfaced showing the gunman outside the building wearing sunglasses and carrying what appeared to be a rifle.

Videos captured by a FOX 5 NY employee showed NYPD officers evacuating the wounded and tending to victims on the ground. Panic gripped the building as occupants hid in kitchens, restrooms, and offices while officers moved floor by floor to secure the premises.

The NYPD, joined by officers from the Sheriff’s Department and FBI agents from the New York Field Office, responded swiftly, sweeping the building in search of any additional threats. While initial fears of a second shooter prompted heightened caution, authorities later confirmed the gunman acted alone.

In a message posted on X (formerly Twitter), Mayor Eric Adams urged residents to avoid the area. “New Yorkers: there is an active shooter investigation taking place in Midtown right now. Please take proper safety precautions,” he warned.

The city’s emergency notification system alerted residents to expect traffic and transit disruptions in the area as police established a wide perimeter around the building.

New York Attorney General Letitia James expressed her concern via social media, writing, “Praying for our law enforcement and the New Yorkers impacted in the shooting situation this evening in Manhattan.”

FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino confirmed the bureau’s involvement, stating that while the NYPD is leading the investigation, federal agents are on-site to provide support. Meanwhile, U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton has established a command post to coordinate the federal response.

The motive behind the attack remains under investigation.
