In a tightly contested first Test between South Africa and Pakistan at Gaddafi Stadium, opener Ryan Rickelton notched his third 50-plus score in Test cricket, anchoring the Proteas’ innings with a gritty 71 to counter Pakistan’s first-innings total of 378. The left-hander’s composed knock, laced with nine boundaries and two sixes off 137 balls, provided much-needed stability after early jolts, helping South Africa recover from a precarious position. Dismissed in the second session by spinner Salman Agha, caught by former captain Babar Azam, Rickelton’s departure came at a time when the visitors were building momentum in their reply.
South Africa’s innings kicked off steadily with a 45-run opening stand between Rickelton and Aiden Markram, but the Proteas soon slipped to 80/2 with the quick falls of Markram and Wiaan Mulder just shy of the 100-run mark. Undaunted, Rickelton forged a crucial 94-run third-wicket partnership with Tony de Zorzi, steering the score past 170 and injecting resilience into the batting lineup. This collaboration proved pivotal in navigating the seaming conditions that greeted the openers, allowing South Africa to claw back into the contest against a disciplined Pakistani attack.
Rickelton’s performance underscores his rising stature as a Test opener, having converted his previous two half-centuries into centuries across 12 matches and 20 innings, where he has accumulated 709 runs at an average of 39.38; his highest being a towering 259 earlier this year against Pakistan in his debut at the top. With the match poised evenly, South Africa’s middle order now faces the task of capitalizing on Rickelton’s foundation to press for a competitive total, while Pakistan’s bowlers seek to exploit any fragility in the lower order.
