Ronaldo Misses Penalty Against Neom, Takes Career Misses to 37
Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty in Al-Nassr’s 1-0 victory over Neom on Tuesday, October 20, bringing his career total of missed spot-kicks to 37.
The Portuguese forward had a chance to put Al-Nassr ahead shortly before half-time. However, he sent his effort wide of the goal.
His miss did not cost Al-Nassr the match. João Félix scored in the second half to secure all three points for the Saudi Arabian club.
Nevertheless, the incident has drawn attention to Ronaldo’s penalty record as the 41-year-old continues his pursuit of 1,000 career goals.
Ronaldo’s penalty record in numbers
According to Transfermarkt’s penalty statistics, Ronaldo has missed 37 penalties throughout his career.
The figures show that the forward has scored 183 of his 220 penalty attempts, giving him a conversion rate of 83.2 per cent.
Despite his latest miss, Ronaldo has maintained a high conversion rate over a career spanning several clubs and the Portugal national team.
However, his record varies across the teams he has represented.
According to Portuguese sports publication A Bola, Ronaldo’s missed penalties are distributed as follows:
- Real Madrid: 13
- Portugal: 10
- Al-Nassr: 5
- Juventus: 5
- Manchester United: 4
His latest miss against Neom was his first failed penalty of the current season and his second in 2026. His previous miss came on February 28, when Al-Nassr defeated Al-Fayha 3-1.
Ronaldo’s worst year for penalty conversion was 2016. He scored seven penalties but missed six from 13 attempts.
How many goals would Ronaldo have without the misses?
Ronaldo’s penalty record also offers another perspective on his pursuit of the 1,000-goal milestone.
If he had converted all 37 penalties he missed, he would have scored 1,018 career goals, according to A Bola’s calculation using Transfermarkt data.
Instead, Ronaldo remains on 981 career goals, leaving him 19 short of the landmark, according to reports following Tuesday’s match.
The missed penalties have not stopped him from building one of football’s most prolific scoring records. His conversion rate of 83.2 per cent also shows that he has scored far more penalties than he has missed.
For now, Ronaldo’s latest miss has added another entry to his penalty record. However, Al-Nassr’s victory means the forward can continue his pursuit of 1,000 career goals without the missed opportunity costing his team points.
