‘Prophecy fulfilled’ — How Osimhen ended Napoli’s 33-year wait for Seria A title

It just had to be Victor Osimhen. On Thursday,  Napoli won their first Seria A title in 33 years after a 1-1 draw against Udinese. The team only needed a point to claim the much-coveted Scudetto and when it mattered most, their star man, Osimhen, came to the rescue.

In a Twitter post, Osimhen described the feat as the fulfilment of a prophecy. He, however,  did not give more details about the prophecy.

Osimhen has had a stellar career since he joined Napoli. This article examines his rise to stardom.

FROM LAGOS TO A GLOBAL STAR

Osimhen was born on December 29, 1998, in Lagos, Nigeria.

Osimhen started his professional football career with the Ultimate Strikers Academy in Nigeria before moving to Europe to play for the German team, VfL Wolfsburg, in 2017. However, he struggled to make an impact in the German side and was sent on loan to Belgian club Charleroi for the 2018-19 season.

It was during his loan spell at Charleroi that Osimhen’s career took off. He scored 20 goals in 36 appearances, attracting the attention of several top European clubs. In August 2019, he signed for French club Lille, where he continued to impress, scoring 18 goals in 38 appearances in his debut season.

Osimhen’s impressive performances caught the eye of Italian giants Napoli, who signed him for a reported fee of €70 million in July 2020. He has since established himself as an important player for the club, scoring important goals in both Serie A and the UEFA Europa League.

At the international level, Osimhen made his debut for the Nigerian national team in 2017 and has since scored several goals for the Super Eagles. He was part of the Nigerian squad that finished third at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

NAPOLI’S CAREER

Victor Osimhen joined Napoli in July 2020 for a reported fee of €70 million, making him the most expensive African player in history at the time. He signed a five-year contract with the Italian club, which runs until 2025.

Since joining Napoli, Osimhen has established himself as an important player for the team, both in Serie A and in European competitions. He has primarily played as a striker, using his speed, strength, and technical ability to create chances and score goals.

In his first season with Napoli, Osimhen has scored 10 goals in 24 appearances in all competitions as of May 2023. He has also provided several assists and has been praised for his work rate and defensive contribution.

Osimhen has helped Napoli to qualify for the UEFA Champions League in his first season, and he has also scored important goals in the competition. He scored a brace against Barcelona in the group stage, helping Napoli to secure a 2-1 win, and he also scored in the round of 16 tie against Manchester United.

Overall, Osimhen’s performances for Napoli have been impressive, and he is seen as a key player for the club’s future success.
