Planning to Join Your Spouse in New Zealand? See the New Visa Application Process
Foreign nationals planning to join their partners in New Zealand should prepare for a change in how certain temporary visa applications are submitted, with a new online system scheduled to take effect on November 16, 2026.
Immigration New Zealand (INZ) will move applications for selected temporary visas for family members of New Zealand citizens and residents to its enhanced Immigration Online system from November 16.
The change will affect people applying for a Partner of a New Zealander Visitor Visa or Work Visa. It will also cover visitor visas for children of New Zealanders and a new student visa category for eligible children.
According to Immigration New Zealand, the new platform is designed to make applications easier to complete and help applicants understand which documents they need to provide.
However, the change does not mean that everyone applying to join a spouse in New Zealand will follow the same process. The affected categories are temporary entry visas, while applications for family residence visas will remain unchanged for now.
How the new spouse visa application process works
Under the updated system, applicants will complete a dynamic online form that adjusts its questions to their circumstances.
The form will guide applicants through the information and supporting evidence required for their specific visa category. This is intended to help people submit more complete applications from the beginning.
Applicants will also be able to upload a digital scan of their passports. The system can then automatically populate relevant passport details, reducing manual data entry and the risk of mistakes.
INZ says the platform is intended to improve communication about application status and expand the self-service options available to applicants.
However, the new system does not guarantee visa approval or a particular processing time. Applicants must still meet the requirements of their chosen visa.
Four visa categories affected by the change
The November 16 transition covers four main categories:
- Partner of a New Zealander Visitor Visa: For eligible partners who want to join their New Zealand citizen or resident partner temporarily.
- Partner of a New Zealander Work Visa: For eligible partners seeking permission to work in New Zealand.
- Child of a New Zealander Visitor Visa: For eligible children visiting their New Zealand citizen or resident parent.
- Child of a New Zealander Student Visa: For eligible children who qualify for domestic student status.
The change is specifically aimed at family members of New Zealand citizens or residents applying for these temporary visas. It should not be confused with every partnership or family visa category.
Applicants can check the requirements for the Partner of a New Zealander Visitor Visa before preparing their applications.
New Zealand also changes some visa conditions
The move to the new platform comes alongside changes to immigration instructions, also scheduled to take effect on November 16.
One change will extend the maximum visitor visa duration for children of New Zealand citizens or residents from nine months to 12 months.
The government will also clarify how the duration of partnership visas is determined for couples who have lived together for less than 12 months.
Other changes will clarify health requirements relating to medical certificates. They will also allow certain residence applications to be deferred where ongoing court proceedings could affect the eligibility of the partner supporting the application.
Additionally, eligible children who qualify for domestic student status will be able to apply for the Child of a New Zealander Student Visa.
What applicants should do before November 16
People planning to join their partners or parents in New Zealand should identify the visa category that matches their circumstances before applying.
They should also prepare their passports and supporting documents and check the latest eligibility requirements on the official immigration website.
For partnership-based applications, a marriage certificate alone may not establish eligibility. Applicants must meet the conditions of their chosen visa and provide the required evidence of their relationship.
The November 16 change concerns the application platform and certain immigration instructions. It does not remove the need to meet the relevant visa requirements.
Applicants seeking permanent residence through a family or partnership route should check the separate rules for that category, as residence applications are not included in this particular system transition.
