Morocco has advanced to the final of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 after securing a hard-fought victory over defending champions Senegal in a thrilling semi-final clash at the Mandela National Stadium. The two-time champions ultimately prevailed over the youthful Senegalese squad, setting up a showdown for the title.
The match, which kicked off at 8:00 PM EAT, saw Senegal take an early lead in the 16th minute through J. Samb, assisted by L. Guèye. However, Morocco quickly responded, with S. Bougrine leveling the score in the 23rd minute. The first half concluded with the score tied at 1-1, reflecting the intense and physical nature of the encounter.
The game remained deadlocked after 90 minutes, forcing the match into extra time. Both teams battled fiercely, but neither could find the winning goal, leading to a penalty shootout. Morocco emerged victorious in the shootout, securing their place in the final.
This victory marks a significant achievement for Morocco, who entered the tournament as favourites but faced challenges, including an early group-stage defeat to hosts Kenya. Under coach Tarik Sektioui, the team demonstrated resilience and tactical prowess, winning their last five matches against West African opposition in CHAN history. They extended their impressive knockout record, winning their eighth straight elimination match since 2014, according to CAF.
Senegal, under coach Souleymane Diallo, had impressed with their youthful squad and defensive solidity throughout the tournament, reaching the semi-finals without conceding in their last four knockout matches. Their journey to the semi-finals included a 1-0 quarter-final victory over Uganda.
Morocco will now face Madagascar in the CHAN 2024 final on Saturday, August 30, at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi, Kenya. Madagascar stunned Sudan 1-0 in their semi-final match, scoring a decisive goal in the final minutes of extra time.
