Apple has finally entered the foldable smartphone market, unveiling the iPhone Duo at its September 9, 2026 event in Cupertino in the first major redesign of the iPhone in years.

The new device opens like a book and combines a conventional smartphone display with a much larger screen designed for entertainment, productivity and multitasking. Starting at $1,999, the iPhone Duo is positioned firmly at the premium end of the smartphone market.

The launch also marks a major moment for newly appointed Apple CEO John Ternus, who took over from Tim Cook on September 1 and used his first major keynote as chief executive to introduce the company’s first foldable iPhone.

The Duo arrives alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, but the foldable model is clearly the headline product. Its success could influence how Apple approaches smartphone design for years to come.

iPhone Duo Brings a Book-Style Foldable Design

The iPhone Duo uses a passport-like design that folds shut and opens outward like a book.

When closed, the phone has a 5.4-inch front display. Opening the device reveals a much larger 7.6-inch internal screen, giving users considerably more space for watching videos, playing games, working and running multiple tasks.

Apple says the unfolded Duo is its thinnest iPhone yet.

The design also changes how applications are displayed depending on the phone’s orientation. Users can fold the device while watching content and have the display reorganize itself, with the upper portion showing the video and the lower portion providing controls.

That approach could make the Duo more than a larger iPhone. Apple is positioning it as a device capable of bridging the gap between a traditional smartphone and a small tablet.

iPhone Duo Price Starts at $1,999

The biggest barrier for potential buyers may be the price.

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999, putting it well above Apple’s standard iPhone models and making it one of the company’s most expensive smartphones.

The pricing also places Apple directly in competition with established foldable phones from companies such as Samsung.

Yet Apple appears to be betting that its customers will accept a premium for a new form factor.

Data highlighted ahead of the launch suggested that consumers have increasingly moved toward Apple’s more expensive Pro and Pro Max models. The share of iPhone shipments represented by those premium models reportedly rose from around 37% in 2020 to approximately 65% in 2025.

That shift gives Apple some reason to believe that a smaller number of buyers paying substantially more could still make the foldable iPhone commercially successful.

Why the iPhone Duo Matters More Than Another iPhone Upgrade

Apple’s foldable launch comes at a sensitive point for the company.

The iPhone remains Apple’s largest business, generating $209.5 billion of the company’s $416.1 billion in revenue in 2025, according to figures cited by Yahoo Finance.

That dependence means a major change to the iPhone carries significant financial implications.

The Duo gives Apple an opportunity to create a new premium product category rather than relying entirely on annual upgrades to the familiar rectangular iPhone design.

Foldables remain a relatively small part of the global smartphone market. Industry estimates cited before the launch put foldables at about 2.2% of global smartphone unit shipments in 2026.

Their revenue share, however, is considerably higher because of their premium prices.

That distinction could work in Apple’s favour. The company may not need to sell iPhone Duo devices at the same scale as conventional iPhones for the product to become an important source of revenue.

iPhone Duo Targets Productivity and Multitasking

The larger internal screen is one of the main reasons Apple expects customers to pay more.

The 7.6-inch display creates additional room for applications, video, games and work-related tasks.

Apple demonstrated how applications can take advantage of the folding design. In Zoom, for instance, the upper section can display the shared content while the lower section shows participants.

The ability to change the screen layout based on how the phone is folded also gives developers an opportunity to create experiences specifically for the Duo’s unusual form factor.

That could become one of the most important factors determining whether consumers see the phone as a genuinely useful new device or simply an expensive novelty.

Apple Puts AI at the Centre of the New iPhone Experience

The iPhone Duo is also part of Apple’s broader push into artificial intelligence.

The latest iPhones feature improved Apple Intelligence capabilities and an upgraded Siri experience called Siri AI.

Apple demonstrated Siri AI handling questions related to users’ messages and emails, interpreting information through the camera and providing broader knowledge-based responses.

The assistant can also perform tasks such as drafting emails through voice or text.

Apple is expanding Apple Intelligence across its ecosystem, including Safari, where the technology can monitor web pages for changes and notify users when relevant updates occur.

The company says Apple Intelligence will support 16 languages, while Siri AI will launch in English before expanding to French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish in October.

iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max Also Get Major Upgrades

While the iPhone Duo dominated attention, Apple also introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.

The two models retain a design similar to the previous generation but receive upgraded A20 Pro processors with improvements to CPU, GPU and neural-engine performance.

Apple has also increased battery performance.

The iPhone 18 Pro is rated for up to 24 hours of battery life, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max is rated for up to 30 hours.

The phones also feature a variable mechanical aperture designed to provide greater control over light and depth when taking photographs.

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, while the Pro Max starts at $1,299.

They will be available from September 18.

Apple Faces a Tougher Foldable Competition

Apple may be new to foldables, but the category itself is not new.

Samsung has spent years developing its Galaxy Z Fold line, while Google and Huawei have also established positions in the market.

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8, for instance, was cited ahead of Apple’s event with a starting price of $1,899, while its higher-end Z Fold 8 Ultra starts at $2,099.

China could prove particularly challenging for Apple. Huawei has maintained a strong position in the Chinese foldable market, giving Apple an established competitor in one of the world’s most important smartphone markets.

The iPhone Duo therefore enters a market where consumers already have several years of experience with folding phones.

Apple’s advantage will need to come from its ecosystem, software integration, brand strength and the way it makes the hardware work with the rest of its products.

Apple Stock Reaction Adds Another Layer to the Launch

Investors gave Apple’s announcement a relatively muted initial response.

Apple shares dipped during Wednesday trading following the company’s product announcements.

That type of reaction is not unusual around major Apple product launches. Analysts have noted that the stock has sometimes experienced a short-term sell-the-news response before recovering over the following weeks.

Bank of America analyst Wamsi Mohan’s analysis cited by Yahoo Finance found that Apple shares had gained during the 60 days following an iPhone reveal 17 times since the original iPhone launch in 2007.

For investors, the more important test will come when Apple reports actual sales and customer demand.

When Will the iPhone Duo Be Available?

Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026, but the company has not positioned the launch as an ordinary iPhone refresh.

The device represents Apple’s first foldable iPhone and introduces a new premium tier starting at $1,999.

The real measure of the product’s success will be whether customers view the large foldable display and new form factor as enough reason to spend substantially more than they would on an iPhone 18 Pro Max.
