Samuel Animashaun Perry, better known by his stage name Broda Shaggi, has taken the Nigerian entertainment industry by storm. Starting off as a comedian, he has now established himself as a multi-talented artist, excelling in acting, songwriting, and even music.

In a recent interview, Broda Shaggi shared the story of how he stumbled upon his famous character and the journey that led him to become one of Nigeria‘s most beloved comedians.

“How I discover the name Broda Shaggi”

It all began when Broda Shaggi visited a mechanic workshop in December 2017. There, he witnessed one of the workers brilliantly portraying a character named Broda Shaggi in the Yoruba language. Intrigued by the act, he decided to give it a shot in his skits. Little did he know that this character would skyrocket him to fame.

Before venturing into comedy, Broda Shaggi had a passion for fine art. However, it was his comedic talents that eventually took center stage. One of his skits titled ‘Jesus Appeared In Mushin’ went viral, propelling him into the limelight. This video showcased his knack for comedy and his ability to entertain with his witty remarks.

But comedy wasn’t the only avenue through which Broda Shaggi made a name for himself. He had already been involved in acting before gaining fame as a social media content creator. During his university days at University of Lagos (UNILAG), he relied on the proceeds from his acting gigs to support himself financially. His dedication and hard work began to pay off as he started gaining recognition in the entertainment industry.

How hunger drove “Broda Shaggi” into comedy

In an interview with TVC in 2020, Shaggi revealed that it was hunger that ignited his comedic genius and propelled him towards social and economic success.

Recounting the genesis of his alter ego, Broda Shaggi said “It was hunger that sparked the flame within me. When hunger strikes, it pushes you to uncover your hidden talents and explore the depths of your capabilities. 

Trust me, I yearned to make a livelihood for myself and prove that I possessed something distinct, something extraordinary. Thus, Broda Shaggi was born. Reflecting upon various characters, I pondered why I couldn’t introduce something refreshing, something uncharted, something that resonated effortlessly with the masses. This is how my iconic character materialized – drawing inspiration from the ubiquitous Agbero we all encounter on the streets.”

When ask when was the very moment he think of venturing into comedy, he said” I was confined for two long months after completing my studies at Unilag, dwelling with my mother. Determined to rewrite my story, striving to provide sustenance for both myself and my family, given the untimely demise of my father, I ventured towards a different path.

I shifted to the island, residing with my friends. It was during this juncture that I discovered the essence of Broda Shaggi within me. I refused to succumb to idle living and decided to embark on a journey of creativity. I resolved to create something unconventional, as I had done with Broda Shaggi.”

Throughout his career, Broda Shaggi experimented with various characters, including Inspector Perry, Professor Dele, and Akanni Ibadan. However, it was the ‘Broda Shaggi’ persona that truly resonated with audiences and propelled him to stardom. His unique comedic timing and distinctive persona have made him a favorite among fans.

Broda Shaggi’s talent was evident from an early age, thanks to the influence of his late father, a drama instructor. As a result, he developed a strong passion for acting. His journey into the world of comedy was shaped by the insights and exercises he learned from his father, which laid the foundation for his success in the industry.

In recognition of his talent, Broda Shaggi was given an opportunity by seasoned Nollywood actress Uche Jumbo, who cast him in one of her TV series. This served as a stepping stone for him, allowing him to showcase his skills and gain more exposure in the industry.

In recent years, Broda Shaggi signed a deal with Davido’s DMW and 30BG. Although the specifics of the deal were not disclosed, it is believed to be a recording or management arrangement, considering Broda Shaggi’s status as a full-time artist and musician.

As one of the top skit makers in Nigeria, Broda Shaggi has amassed a huge following on social media. His comedy skits, featuring collaborations with other comedians and actors such as James Brown, Iyabo Ojo, Kie Kie, and Nengi, can be found on his YouTube channel.

Amidst all the fame and success, there have been rumors surrounding Broda Shaggi’s love life. However, it was clarified by Sophia Ojireoghene, popularly known as Aunty Shaggi, that they were not romantically involved. Instead, a humorous claim suggests that Broda Shaggi has a deep affection for DJ Cuppy, the daughter of Nigerian billionaire Femi Otedola.

With his unmatched talent and unwavering dedication, Broda Shaggi has become a household name in Nigeria’s entertainment industry. From his humble beginnings to his groundbreaking success, he continues to captivate audiences with his humor and versatility.
