In a recent development that has raised widespread concern among students, parents, and academic stakeholders, the much-anticipated 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE)  result in Ghana faces the risk of being withheld.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Ghana has disclosed the primary reason behind this situation.

According to them, it has never happened before, WAEC Ghana has always released WASSCE result according to the normal calendar. The delay in the release of result this year is due to some factors the council has tables to the government. In fact, the release of results has never been extended to this time as the office will soon close for the festive season.

The reason behind the delay

The Head of Pubic Relations at WAEC, Mr John Kapi, revealed in an exclusive interview with Adom news that the reason for the delay is because the council has not received the arrears for conducting exams from the government.

GhanaWeb reports that the government owes WAEC a whooping sum of GH€118 million.

In addition to this, there is also another GH€25million needed for repair of scanners for processing objective results.

Mr Kapi further revealed that with just few weeks to the end of the year, and the huge financial challenge, there is no specific date for the release of results.

Lending their voice to this, the Conference of Heads of Private Second-Cycle Schools (CHOPSS) has called on the government to expedite payment of GH₵118 million owed to WAEC.

3News reported that the voice of private education in Ghana, has issued a stern warning to the government, demanding immediate intervention to resolve this crisis. The association argues that the delay, primarily stemming from the breakdown of crucial scanners due to a lack of funds for maintenance and repairs, is not only unacceptable but also a grave injustice to students who have diligently prepared for their examinations.

However,Ghana Broadcasting Corporation  reported that the government has paid the sum of GH€25million. This was made known by  Dr. Clement Apaak, Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Education Committee.

Speaking on Citi Fm, Dr Apaak said, “The government has issued a cheque for GH¢25 million, but the total debt is GH¢118 million. This amount is less than half of what is owed and will not fully address the problem,”

This payment came after WAEC has issued several warning of closure for the year. Mr Kapi, WAEC Head of PR, said the money would be used to repair scanners and spoilt equipment for the objective processing of result.

Meanwhile,WAEC has continued to appeal for the payment of the remaining funds to ensure that results are processed smoothly.
