FIFA ranking: Nigeria moves 3rd in Africa, Ghana missing in top 10
The Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) has released the latest ranking of international teams around the world. The new rankings was released after the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the Asia Cup.
Emerse Faé led Ivory Coast to complete one of the greatest turnarounds in major tournament history to win the AFCON by beating Nigeria 2-1 in Sunday’s final.
Despite being the first host nation to win the AFCON since Egypt in 2006, the Elephants came dangerously close to elimination in the group stage. They are currently ranked 39th in the world after moving up ten spots in the latest FIFA ranking for 2024.
Nigeria, meanwhile, is currently ranked 28th after rising 14 spots in the world and from 6th to third in Africa in the new FIFA ranking following their participation in the AFCON final. But no team has risen higher than Angola, who are now ranked 93rd after rising 24 spots. They rank as the world’s largest climbers.
However, the FIFA top ten list, which was released earlier today (15th February 2024), is unchanged from the 2023 list. Following their victory in the World Cup in Qatar, Argentina is still atop the rankings, followed by France and England in second and third place, respectively.
The world football organisation uses a point system in which points are distributed based on the results of all complete international matches that are recognised by FIFA.
Below is the list of top 10 African men’s national football teams according to the latest FIFA rankings.
