The invasion of the Lagos State House of Assembly plenary session by the Department of State Security Service (DSS) has raised a lot of controversies on the leadership of the House.
Most Lawmakers condemned the act and addressed it as unlawful. However, sources have alleged that the invasion was connected to the impeached former Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa
According to BusinessDaynews, a source disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was not happy with the impeachment of Obasa because the House didn’t carry him along in their decision. It was also disclosed by the source that the President wants Obasa back to the House. Hence, the division and unrest in the plenary session.
“Look at what is happening because of Obasa. The House is divided; members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) are divided among themselves, and there is division all over the place. This is not good for anybody. The invasion of the Assembly by the Department of State Services (DSS) was also unnecessary,” the source stated.

However, the director of the DSS had refuted the claim of invasion on the House stating that the DSS went to the plenary session on invitation. According to him, a letter by the Acting Clerk of the House, A Ottun, dated February 14, 2025, requested the presence of the security agents on the grounds of the Assembly on February 17th for alleged information gotten that the impeached speaker Obasa wanted to invade the place and take back His seat.
Meanwhile, the true reason behind the presence of the DSS is yet to be known as the House of Assembly has not yet issued a press statement to address the matter. Sources also gathered that the House has adjourned sine die.
A lot of politically active citizens are worried that the decision of the indefinite adjournment by the house would affect the governance and decision-making process in the State.
Despite the disruption of the plenary session by the DSS, the House of Assembly lawmakers have passed a vote of confidence on Mojisola Meranda duy recognizing her as the speaker of the House as she went so emotional as a result of the rancour from the DSS invasion.
Why Obasa is fighting against his impeachment
Obasa has allegedly called his removal a ‘coup’ because he was impeached in absentia by 32 out of 40 Lawmakers while he was in America.
He also believed that the financial allegation and vote of no confidence passed on him by the House was illegal.
He filed a suit against the lawmakers at the Ikeja Division of the State High Court, challenging the decision of the 32 lawmakers. However, he’s yet to be given the needed hearing he seeks.
Despite his political connections and reach, he has been replaced by Mojisola Meranda even though he has yet to accept his fate.
