DSS alleges Nnamdi Kanu’s radio broadcasts incites violence

Nnamdi Kanu

The Department of State Services- DSS has accused Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), of using radio broadcasts to incite violence and severely disrupt the economy of Nigeria’s South-East region. The allegations were detailed in a court testimony reporten Friday, June 13, 2025.

According to a DSS operative identified only as Mr. DDD, Kanu utilized his radio platform to rally members of the public against the Federal Government. The operative stated that a search of Kanu’s residence, conducted under a valid warrant, uncovered a transmitter along with incriminating items, including firearms, cartridges, Biafran currency, and Indian hemp. These findings were presented as evidence linking Kanu to activities that destabilized the region.

The DSS claims that Kanu’s broadcasts, which included calls for sit-at-home orders, led to widespread economic paralysis in the South-East. These orders, often enforced with threats of violence, restricted movement and halted commercial activities, significantly impacting local businesses and the federal government’s operations in the region.Kanu, who has been in DSS custody since 2021, faces seven counts of terrorism and treasonable felony. The prosecution submitted a flash drive containing 18 video clips and 16 radio broadcasts attributed to Kanu, which were admitted into evidence during the ongoing trial.

The case has sparked varied reactions on social media. Some supporters argue that Kanu enjoys widespread support among the Igbo population and that unity with Nigeria should not be forced. Others however, have pointed out the irony of IPOB’s actions, noting that the sit-at-home orders have impoverished the very communities they claim to represent, driving many to seek opportunities elsewhere.

The trial continues to draw significant attention, with the DSS maintaining that Kanu’s actions pose a threat to national security. Further hearings are expected to shed more light on the evidence and the broader implications for the South-East region and Nigeria as a whole.
