Do Nigerians need a visa to enter Singapore? See latest requirements
Singapore allows nationals of many countries to enter without obtaining an entry visa beforehand, but Nigerian passport holders are not among those exempt from the country’s visa requirement.
The clarification comes as reports circulate that Singapore grants visa-free entry to citizens of more than 160 countries.
According to Singapore’s Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA), nationals of 35 countries and territories require an entry visa before travelling to Singapore, and Nigeria is on the list.
This means Nigerians planning a normal short-term visit to Singapore cannot travel using only their Nigerian passport and expect to receive visa-free entry.
Does Nigeria require a Singapore visa?

Nigerian passport holders require a Singapore entry visa before travelling to the country for a short-term visit.

The ICA also identifies certain other travel documents, including some refugee, temporary and special travel documents, whose holders may require visas regardless of nationality.
What does visa-free entry mean?
For travellers whose nationality or travel document does not appear on Singapore’s visa-required list, a visa is generally not required before travelling for a short visit.
However, this should not be confused with an automatic right to enter Singapore.
Foreign travellers must still satisfy Singapore’s immigration requirements when they arrive.
The ICA states that a traveller’s admission is subject to assessment by immigration officers at the checkpoint.
Therefore, being from a visa-exempt country does not guarantee admission.
What documents do travellers need?
Singapore requires foreign visitors to meet several conditions before they can enter.
One of the basic requirements is a passport with at least six months’ validity.
Travellers must also submit the SG Arrival Card within three days before their arrival in Singapore.
The SG Arrival Card is an electronic arrival declaration and is not a visa.

Nigerians should not confuse the Arrival Card with a visa
For Nigerian travellers, this distinction is particularly important.
Submitting the SG Arrival Card does not give a Nigerian passport holder permission to enter Singapore without a visa.
A Nigerian traveller who requires a Singapore visa must obtain the visa separately before travelling.
The Arrival Card is simply an immigration declaration required from travellers entering Singapore.
Singapore’s ICA says travellers should submit it within three days before arrival, excluding the day of arrival.
What about transiting through Singapore?
Singapore also operates a Visa-Free Transit Facility (VFTF) for eligible travellers from some countries whose nationals ordinarily require visas.

Does having a Singapore visa guarantee entry?
No.
A visa allows a traveller to travel to Singapore and seek admission, but it does not automatically guarantee entry.
Singapore’s immigration officers make the final decision at the point of entry.
The period a visitor is allowed to remain in Singapore is also determined when the person is admitted into the country.
The ICA says visitors receive an Electronic Visit Pass (e-Pass) containing information about their period of stay and other details.
This means travellers should not assume that the validity period of their visa is the same thing as the amount of time they are permitted to remain in Singapore.
Why the 160-country claim can be misleading
The claim that Singapore is “granting visa-free entry to citizens of 160 countries” needs context.
Singapore’s official immigration system is structured around a list of countries and travel documents whose holders require visas.
The current ICA list contains 35 countries and territories.
Consequently, nationals of many other countries do not need to obtain a Singapore entry visa beforehand, provided they meet the country’s other entry requirements.
But this is different from saying Singapore has just announced a new visa-free programme covering 160 countries.
For Nigerians, the practical implication is clear: Nigeria remains on Singapore’s visa-required list.
