CrispNG trains UNIZIK students on campus journalism

In a bid to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in the field of journalism, the Union of Campus Journalists (UCJ) unizik, in collaboration with CrispNG organised an online training on campus journalism.
The training, which took place on Saturday, July 20, 2024, via Google Meet, was facilitated by Mr James Ojo, co-founder of CrispNG and senior copy editor at legit.ng.
“Campus journalism is a vibrant field that offers numerous opportunities for students to gain practical experience, access fellowships, grants, and awards, and prepare for a career in journalism,” said Mr Ojo
Mr Ojo emphasized the importance of campus journalism, highlighting its benefits, including gaining practical experience, accessing fellowships, grants, and awards, and preparing students for a career in journalism.
He also stressed the need for campus journalists to uphold ethical standards, including public trust, truthfulness, fairness, integrity, independence, and accountability. He noted that campus journalists face challenges such as threats of repression, funding, libel, and balancing academic responsibilities.

“The training was inspirational and informative; it has shaped my determination in the field of journalism,” said Moneke Kamsiyochukwu, noted in a post event interview.
“Campus journalists must be careful when writing controversial stories to avoid prosecution, and always strive to publish balanced stories,” added James Ojo.
Epiphanus Obia, the president of UCJ Unizik, encouraged young journalists to persevere, apply for opportunities, and remain open to learning. Miss Victoria, an English Language and Literature student, advised aspiring journalists to be selfless, prayerful, and cautious in their pursuit of stories.
The training session underscored the significance of campus journalism in shaping the future of the media industry and preparing students for success beyond graduation.
