Chris Brown arrested in UK for alleged 2023 nightclub assault

On May 15, 2025 in Manchester, UK, American R&B singer Chris Brown was arrested in Manchester early Thursday morning on suspicion of grievous bodily harm, stemming from an alleged assault at a London nightclub in February 2023. The 36-year-old musician was detained at The Lowry Hotel at approximately 2:00 AM by Metropolitan Police detectives from the Central West Area Basic Command Unit, according to a statement from the police.
The incident in question occurred on February 19, 2023, at Tape nightclub in London’s Mayfair district, specifically at a venue in Hanover Square during a club night called “Dirty Martini.” Music producer Amadou “Abe” Diaw claims Brown attacked him unprovoked, striking him over the head with a tequila bottle two or three times before punching and kicking him while he lay on the floor. Diaw was reportedly hospitalized following the assault. In October 2023, Diaw filed a $16 million lawsuit against Brown, accusing the singer of “ruthlessly” stomping on him during the altercation.
Authorities apprehended Brown shortly after he arrived in Manchester, ahead of his scheduled 20th anniversary tour, which includes over 10 performances across the UK starting next month. It remains unclear whether this arrest will impact his tour dates. A representative for Brown has not yet responded to requests for comment.
Brown’s legal troubles are not strange. The singer has faced multiple allegations of violence over the years, most notably a 2009 felony assault case involving his then-girlfriend Rihanna. More recently, a 2020 sexual assault allegation surfaced in the documentary Chris Brown: A History of Violence, produced by ID, which Brown has contested through a $500 million lawsuit against Warner Bros., Ample, and the documentary’s producers, claiming defamation.
The arrest has sparked varied reactions online. Some social media users referenced Brown’s history of violence, while others questioned the narrative, suggesting there may be more to the story. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities yet to release further details on potential charges or court proceedings.
