Charles Johnson: Meet Nigerian-trained general appointed Liberia’s top security chief
Liberian President Joseph Boakai has appointed Major General Charles Johnson (retired) as the Director of the National Security Agency on Monday.
Pending confirmation by the Liberian Senate, this appointment follows his resignation as Minister of National Defense some months ago.

Things to know about Charles Johnson:
- Charles Johnson served as the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Liberia for six years.
- He completed one of his officers’ courses at the Nigeria Army School of Infantry in Jaji, Kaduna State.
- Johnson is an alumnus of the United States Army Command and General Staff College.
- He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant after completing Officer Candidate School in 2007.
- In the American Federation of Labor (AFL), he served as Military Assistant to former Minister of National Defence, Brownie J. Samukai Jr.
- Former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf promoted Johnson to Brigade Commander of the 23rd Infantry Brigade in 2014, making him the first Liberian to hold this post after the end of the Liberian Civil War.
- Johnson obtained a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from the United Methodist University in 2004.
