Birmingham Tragedy: What happened on Smallbrook Queensway?

A Birmingham community is reeling following the fatal stabbing of a woman in the city centre last Friday evening.
Katie Fox, 34, tragically died after sustaining a neck wound on Smallbrook Queensway just before 9:00 PM on Friday, November 7th. Despite being rushed to the hospital, she succumbed to her injuries, according to West Midlands Police.

Suspect appears in court

The investigation quickly led to an arrest. On Monday morning, Djeison Rafael, 21, of Rosedale Avenue in Smethwick, appeared before Birmingham Magistrates Court charged with Ms. Fox’s murder.
The short hearing was notable for Mr. Rafael’s multiple interruptions, which led the judge to instruct him to remain quiet and look forward.
Due to the severity of the alleged crimes, Mr. Rafael’s case was immediately referred to the Crown Court. He faces a range of additional charges, including two counts of causing actual bodily harm on two separate dates, possession of an offensive weapon (Stanley blade) on November 7th, and assaulting a detention escort officer.
District Judge John Bristow formally remanded the defendant and directed that his case be sent to the Crown Court for further proceedings on November 12th.
Police Appeal for Witnesses
West Midlands Police continue to urge the public to come forward with information. Detectives are particularly interested in the movements of Mr. Rafael on the evening of Friday, November 7th.
“We are still keen to hear from anyone who knows more about what happened or the movements of Rafael, who we believe was wearing an all-grey tracksuit, black hat, trainers, and rucksack on Friday evening,” a police spokesperson stated. Witnesses are asked to contact authorities by calling 101.
Public Figures Respond
The incident drew immediate reaction from public officials. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood took to social media on Saturday night to express her shock, calling the attack “unprovoked.”
“My thoughts are with the victim, her family and friends,” she wrote, while also commending the police for their “swift action” in making an arrest.
