Beckenham fire: what caused the huge blaze near Odeon cinema?

Smoke billows above Beckenham High Street as firefighters tackle huge blaze near Odeon cinema

A huge fire has broken out on Beckenham High Street, sending thick smoke across southeast London and drawing a major response from the London Fire Brigade. The blaze, which began at a former kebab shop next to the Odeon cinema, quickly spread to nearby buildings, forcing road closures, bus diversions and safety warnings for residents. While the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, emergency crews say the incident has had a significant impact on the local area.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) confirmed that ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters were deployed from Beckenham, Bromley, Woodside, and Forest Hill stations after receiving the first of 18 emergency calls just before 8am.

A 32-metre turntable ladder was also used as crews fought to contain the blaze. LFB advised people nearby to keep doors and windows shut due to smoke, and urged drivers to avoid the area as major traffic disruption hit rush hour.

Several bus routes, including the 54, 227, 352, 354, and 367, were diverted away from the High Street.

Bromley Council confirmed that while the fire started adjacent to the Odeon, the cinema roof later caught alight. The cause remains unknown at this stage.

Local councillor Chloe-Jane Ross said:
“Hope it’s brought under control quickly and no-one’s hurt. Huge respect to the brave emergency crews. Too early to speculate on the cause.”
