UC Berkeley Beahrs ELP 2027: Costs, Partial Scholarships and How to Apply

UC Berkeley’s 2027 Beahrs Environmental Leadership Program is accepting applications from professionals working on environmental, climate and sustainability issues. The two-week in-person programme is preceded by two online sessions, and it is designed for mid-career practitioners who want intensive leadership training rather than a degree.
The headline funding point needs care: the programme fee is US$9,100, and the available awards are limited, partial scholarships. They are not guaranteed and do not cover travel or visa costs. The first scholarship review is scheduled for 6 November 2026.
What the 2027 programme includes
The official programme page lists online sessions on 15 and 16 June 2027, followed by an in-person session at UC Berkeley from 1 to 16 July. The application form and FAQ say both parts are required. The in-person portion includes lectures, leadership and professional skills workshops, group projects, field visits and programme events. Housing and most meals are provided for the in-person period.
Participants who complete the programme receive UC Berkeley’s Certificate in Sustainable Environmental Management. The interdisciplinary teaching draws on environmental and natural-resource subjects as well as leadership, communication and management. This is a professional certificate programme, not a master’s degree or a job or immigration pathway.
Who should apply?
Beahrs ELP describes the opportunity as intended for mid-career environmental and sustainability professionals from different sectors and countries. Its published applicant criteria ask for:
- a recent professional resume showing strong experience and leadership potential, prepared in the programme’s required format;
- affiliation with a department or organisation concerned with environmental, sustainability or climate issues; and
- enough English proficiency to take part fully in course discussions.
The programme does not publish a nationality restriction or a fixed number of required years of experience on its applicant page. That does not mean admission is automatic: the programme reviews applications and places are limited. Applicants should explain how the training connects to their work and the environmental challenges they want to address.
What does it cost, and what can scholarships cover?
The 2027 course fee is US$9,100. UC Berkeley says the fee includes housing and most meals during the in-person programme. It advises participants to budget about US$500 for personal expenses and to arrange and pay for their own international and domestic travel to Berkeley. Visa application fees are also outside the scholarship coverage.
The programme offers a limited number of partial scholarships, with amounts and recipient numbers varying according to available funds. Awards can be used towards programme fees, including accommodation, but not travel or visa costs. The published criteria include financial need, professional experience, potential to make a positive difference in the applicant’s community and any criteria attached to a particular award. Fellowships may also be available, but neither a scholarship nor a fellowship is guaranteed.
Plan the budget on the assumption that you may need to pay the full programme fee and travel costs. Do not treat the word “scholarship” as a promise of full funding.
Key application and scholarship dates
The 2027 application opened on 4 September 2026. The official programme page gives two priority review dates for scholarship eligibility: 6 November 2026 and 15 January 2027. A complete application received by one of those dates receives priority review for scholarship consideration. Applications may still be accepted afterwards, but funding is limited; the programme does not state a final closing date on its 2027 page. Its application form also says admissions are reviewed on a rolling basis and partial scholarships are awarded until funds are exhausted.
How to apply
- Check the fit. Read the programme’s official applicant criteria and confirm that your current organisation or department works on environmental, sustainability or climate issues.
- Work out the full budget. Review the official costs and financial-support page. Include the US$9,100 fee, personal expenses, travel and any visa costs; scholarship amounts are partial and uncertain.
- Prepare the required materials. Use the resume format linked from the applicant page. The official application form asks for a recent professional resume and at least one signed recommendation letter; a second letter is optional. The form estimates about 45 minutes to complete and says applicants can save progress and return on the same device and browser.
- Submit a complete application for priority scholarship review. Start and submit through the official 2027 application form. To be considered in the first scholarship review, submit by 6 November 2026; the second review date is 15 January 2027. Only complete applications are reviewed by the admissions panel.
- Plan for travel and attendance early. Both the online and in-person components are required. The programme advises international applicants to apply early so they have time to arrange a visa and external funding. Check the US Department of State visa information for the rules that apply to your nationality and circumstances.
Before committing funds, read the programme’s FAQ and withdrawal and refund policy. They explain what the fee covers, the limits of scholarship support and what may happen if a participant cannot travel.
