ANC NEC charts recovery strategy for 2026 municipal elections

The African National Congress (ANC) has begun mapping out its recovery plan for the 2026 local government elections, following mounting criticism over declining service delivery and poor municipal governance.

Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula confirmed that the ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) held a special sitting this weekend to confront its challenges head-on. The meeting, convened in Boksburg, sought to assess municipal performance since the 2021 elections and prepare a turnaround strategy.

Ramaphosa highlights skills crisis in municipalities

Party President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered the political overview, emphasising that the country’s municipalities face deep-rooted problems caused by poorly skilled and politically appointed personnel.

“Many challenges at the local level are the result of inadequately skilled staff who cannot meet residents’ needs,” Ramaphosa said. “Financial management in particular remains a weak point, fuelling perceptions of a failing ANC.”

His remarks drew on findings from the auditor general, who flagged political instability, mismanagement of funds, and infighting as key drivers of poor service delivery.

Holding councillors accountable

ANC councillors were called to account for their performance and warned that incompetence and corruption will not be tolerated as the party gears up for a tough election battle in 2026.

Ramaphosa also urged rival parties to exercise caution in candidate selection, warning against political appointments that undermine the competence of local government.

The NEC is expected to present a comprehensive action plan aimed at rebuilding public trust, addressing skills shortages, and stabilising fragile municipalities.
