2023: Fashola backs Muslim-Muslim ticket, says Tinubu remains best candidate for president
By Genevieve Aningo
Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has backed Bola Tinubu to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.
The minister endorsed Tinubu’s presidential bid when he featured on ‘Sunday Politics’, a Channels Television programme.
The former governor of Lagos state argued that Tinubu remains the best candidate in the presidential race — which also includes Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP).
He said: “How do we move ourselves to the prosperity that is imminent that this country would have because I know it would happen. Who is the best person to drive that vehicle?
“In my own opinion Asiwaju is the best person to drive that vehicle”.
During the interview, Fashola also declared support for Tinubu’s choice of Muslim-Muslim ticket ahead of 2023.
Tinubu, who is a Muslim, had earlier announced Kashima Shettima, also a Muslim, as his running mate.
The development has continued to trigger heated outrage in several quarters.
But speaking on the show, Fashola dismissed criticisms of the Muslim-Muslim ticket.
The ex-governor argued that Nigerians should consider competence when electing their leaders not religion.
He added: “My position on religion has been made known on different platforms. I think religion should leave the public space and go back to where it belongs to the homes and spiritual centres.
“There is too much religion in our public lives and there is no nation that I know that is venerising religion. It is a private thing and I think we should just stop there and get back to the real business.”
