Though the president has yet to openly declared his intention to seek reelection, there are thick speculations he may run for Nigeria’s highest political office once again.
In the recent times, many prominent Nigerians have warned Buhari against seeking reelection in 2019.
Erstwhile President Olusegun Obasanjo and his counterpart, a former military Head of State, Ibrahim Babangida, recently added their voice to the calls in separate controversial letters, observing that that Nigeria needs fresh crops of leaders.
Reacting to the letters’, which generated dusts across the nation, Tinubu had claimed both Obasanjo and Babangida, former should join the retirees club.
But speaking in a statement issued on Wednesday, through its spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, the main opposition party in the country said the former Lagos governor was only trying to avoid the obvious, claiming that every discerning Nigerians knows Buhari has performed below expectations.
The statement reads: “Every discerning Nigerian has discovered the fact that Asiwaju Tinubu is subtly passing a critical message to President Buhari and his supporters that he should not contest the 2019 election and that Nigerians have already moved on even without them.
“Even Asiwaju Tinubu knows that President Buhari, for obvious reasons, is the most qualified of all our elder statesmen to join the retiree’s club and save the nation the agony of more years of misrule characterised by untold economic hardship, heavy bloodletting and general indignation.
“The supporters of President Buhari should therefore accept the reality by reading the handwriting on the wall and heed wise counsel from well-meaning Nigerians.”
