Why did Xavien Howard retire?

Veteran cornerback Xavien Howard has decided to step away from the NFL just weeks after attempting a comeback with the Indianapolis Colts. The 32-year-old, who signed with the team in August following a year away from football, announced his retirement on Wednesday, October 1.

Howard’s decision comes on the heels of a difficult outing against the Los Angeles Rams, where he struggled in coverage against standout receiver Puka Nacua. According to Next Gen Stats, Howard was the closest defender on seven catches that went for 112 yards and a touchdown. Despite the performance, Colts coaches had not indicated that his starting role was in jeopardy.

In a heartfelt statement shared on social media, Howard explained that his priorities have shifted, emphasizing his faith and commitment to his family.

“My dream has now changed,” he wrote. “I’ve fulfilled my purpose in this sport, but I’m no longer willing to put football ahead of my kids. I’ve had a great career, and even though this isn’t the way most expect it to end, I’m proud that I’m finally putting family first.”

Howard also noted that time away from the game in 2024 gave him a new perspective. He credited that period with deepening his relationship with God and allowing him to embrace the joy of being more present in his children’s lives.

The four-time Pro Bowler walks away with an impressive résumé. Drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the second round in 2016, Howard twice led the league in interceptions and earned first-team All-Pro honors in 2020. That season, he posted 10 interceptions and 20 passes defended, finishing as a finalist for Defensive Player of the Year. Over his career, he recorded 29 interceptions—ranking third among active players at the time of his retirement—and started 103 games.

Howard’s contract with Indianapolis was a one-year deal worth $1.255 million. His retirement means he leaves the league just four games into the 2025 season.

Despite a difficult final chapter on the field, Howard’s career is defined by his ball-hawking ability, consistency as a starter, and influence as one of the premier cornerbacks of his era.
