Wike vs Fubara? What to know about Rivers’ impeachment saga

Siminalayi Fubara

Rivers State has experienced unrest in the last 24 hours. From arson at the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex in Port Harcourt to Police shooting tear gas canisters at youths protesting against the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

In an unforeseen move, Governor Fubara was served a notice of impeachment by the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The statement as signed by the Head of Communication, James Sogulu stated that the impeachment was based on gross misconduct in the performance of the functions of the office of the governor.

Governor Fubara addressed the situation of arson, expressing concern about the destruction of public property. He also mentioned security issues stating that security has been compromised as he claimed to have been shot at on Monday by security operatives.

Fubara said that an alternative location for the House of Assembly to conduct its business should be provided by the security.

He also mentioned that he doesn’t mind being impeached, but must be given concrete reasons for his impeachment as he would not be intimidated.

However, lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly who support Governor Siminalayi Fubara have chosen Edison Ehie as the newly appointed Speaker.

Previously, Ehie held the position of House Leader until the suspension of former Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Martins Amaehwule on Monday.

However, he informed the media at the Government House in Port Harcourt that 26 House members convened to make the decision. It can be recalled that earlier 24 house members had attempted to impeach Fubara.

The ongoing distress is linked to the ‘godfather-godson feud’ between former governor, Nyesom Wike and Fubara. Reports have it that Wike still influences the affairs of Rivers State despite relinquishing his former position.

Youths who protested warned that Wike steered clear of the affairs of the state.

Godfatherism in Nigerian politics: what you should know

Godfatherism refers to a system where a powerful, usually wealthy, and influential individual acts as a mentor or sponsor for a political candidate, providing financial, logistical, and strategic support in return for loyalty and political favors. These godfathers often hold considerable sway within a political party, and their endorsement can significantly impact a candidate’s chances of winning an election.

The roots of political godfatherism in Nigeria can be traced to the transition from military rule to democracy in 1999. As political parties began to emerge, powerful individuals saw an opportunity to shape the nation’s political future by sponsoring and mentoring candidates who aligned with their interests. This led to the rise of godfathers within the political system.

Godfathers in Nigerian politics often come from business, political, or even criminal backgrounds. They are known to wield immense financial power, controlling resources that can make or break political careers. Their influence extends to candidate selection, election funding, and even appointments within the government.

One of the most famous examples is Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, often referred to as the “Lion of Bourdillon.” Tinubu’s influence in Lagos State politics is legendary, and his endorsement has been a significant factor in the success of various political aspirants within the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Wike and Fubara share that ‘godfather-godson’ relationship which has now gone sour and is open for all to see, just as their sweet moments. The Tinubu-Ambode story comes to mind, as Ambode lost his reelection bid after trying to rebel against his godfather.

Siminialayi Fubara, a former accountant-general with the Rivers State Government became governor with the support of Wike having won the 2023 election.

Wike’s undue interference and control of Rivers State despite vacating the seat of Governor in May, 5 months ago triggered the rift.

Reports suggest that Wike expressed dissatisfaction with Fubara’s efforts to revive Shonghai Farm and other ongoing initiatives aimed at benefiting the public. Shonghai Farm was originally started by former Governor Chibuike Amaechi, who has been embroiled in a prolonged feud with Wike.

In an interview on channels, when Wike was asked if he’ll be worried if his successor turns against him, his response was “Was he brought to serve me? He was brought to serve the state”. However, with the goings on, he seems to have gone back on his word.

Impact of Godfatherism in Nigerian Politics

The influence of Godfatherism in Nigerian politics has profound implications:

1. Candidate Selection: Godfathers often impose their preferred candidates on political parties, regardless of merit. This can lead to the emergence of candidates who may not be the most qualified but are loyal to the godfather.

2. Corruption: Godfathers can use their financial resources to manipulate the political system, leading to corruption and a lack of accountability within the government.

3. Lack of Ideological Consistency: The prevalence of Godfatherism can lead to a lack of ideological consistency within political parties. Candidates may prioritize loyalty to their godfather over the party’s principles.

4. Limited Accountability: Elected officials beholden to their godfathers may prioritize their benefactor’s interests over those of the electorate, undermining accountability in governance.
