Who is Timothy Craig Ramsey? Fugitive wanted for shooting McCaysville police captain

Phones across parts of North Carolina buzzed with a Blue Alert late Saturday as authorities expanded their search for a man accused of shooting a McCaysville police captain in North Georgia. The suspect, 26-year-old Timothy Craig Ramsey, is now the subject of an urgent multi-state manhunt.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), the incident unfolded around 11:10 p.m. on September 12, when McCaysville Police Captain Brantley Worley responded to a call. During the encounter, Ramsey allegedly opened fire, critically injuring the veteran officer. Worley, who was promoted to captain just this past July and is also an ordained minister, remains in critical condition. Colleagues describe him as a faithful public servant with an unwavering commitment to both his department and the community he serves.

Who Is the Suspect?

Ramsey, described as a white male, 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing about 185 pounds, has long brown hair and blue eyes. He was last seen near 1st Street in McCaysville wearing a green top, dark-colored pants, and a dark motorcycle helmet. Police warn he is armed and extremely dangerous. Residents are urged not to approach him under any circumstances but to call 911 immediately or submit tips to the GBI.

Authorities believe Ramsey may have fled toward Cherokee County, North Carolina, prompting officials there to issue the Blue Alert to keep residents vigilant.

Prior Record Raises Alarm

This is not Ramsey’s first run-in with the law. Court documents reveal he was arrested in Bartow County in April 2024 on a misdemeanor battery charge. He was booked into jail and later released on bond two days later. McCaysville Police Chief Michael Earley confirmed that his department had previous encounters with Ramsey prior to the shooting.

A Coordinated Manhunt

The GBI has confirmed it is working with the Fannin County Sheriff’s Office, McCaysville Police, and federal partners in the search for Ramsey. Chief Earley emphasized that public safety is the top priority and that every resource is being directed toward bringing the fugitive into custody without further violence.

What to Do if You Spot Him

Police are urging anyone who sees Ramsey to:

  • Call 911 immediately.

  • Avoid approaching or confronting him.

  • Provide as many details as possible about his clothing, location, and direction of travel.
Information can also be submitted to the McCaysville Police Department or the GBI Tip Line.

Understanding the Blue Alert System

The Blue Alert system, which North Carolina has used since 2016, is designed to quickly share suspect information when a law enforcement officer is killed or seriously injured. Much like the Amber Alert for missing children or the Silver Alert for missing elderly individuals, the Blue Alert aims to mobilize communities in aiding law enforcement.

A Community on Edge

The shooting has left the small town of McCaysville shaken. Captain Worley, known for his dedication and faith, has long been a fixture in the department and his absence is being felt deeply. As the manhunt intensifies, residents in Georgia and North Carolina remain on high alert, awaiting updates on both Worley’s recovery and Ramsey’s capture.
