Orlando Pirates Football Club can confirm the appointment of a new Captain and Vice-Captains ahead of the start of the 2025/26 season.
The position of captain has been vacant since the departure of long-serving defender Innocent Maela. Maela led from 2022 to date, having taken over from another stalwart and legend, Happy Jele.
In keeping with club tradition, the appointment came directly from the players themselves through a confidential voting process.
Emerging as the team’s clear choice to wear the captain’s armband is defender Nkosinathi Sibisi.
Speaking on his new captaincy announcement, Sibisi said: “It is truly an honour and privilege to be named captain of this great institution. It’s a responsibility that I accept and promise to fulfil the role in the best way I possibly can.”
Sibisi will be assisted by Thapelo Xoki and Mbekezeli Mbokazi who have been named as Vice-Captains.
Who is Nkosinathi Sibisi? Meet Orlando Pirates’ New Captain

Steady, no-nonsense, and deeply respected by his peers, Sibisi is not just a capable defender—he is a natural leader both on and off the pitch. Here’s what every Buccaneers supporter should know about him.
A Defender Built on Discipline and Consistency
Sibisi made his name as a rock-solid central defender, known for his composure, clean tackling, and aerial dominance. Having joined Pirates from Golden Arrows, he quickly cemented his place in the starting eleven. Experience Beyond His Years
At just 29 years old, Sibisi brings a perfect blend of youth and maturity. He has been part of high-pressure matches and continental fixtures, giving him the kind of experience that younger players can look up to. His tactical understanding and professionalism set a strong example in the dressing room.
Quiet Leader, Big Presence

Vision for the Future
In his first words as captain, Sibisi spoke of the “honour and privilege” of leading the club and promised to serve to the best of his ability. With the 2025/26 season approaching, his immediate focus will be on rallying the team for a strong start, beginning with their MTN8 clash against Richards Bay.
But beyond that, Sibisi represents a leadership shift rooted in trust, hard work, and accountability. Under his guidance, fans can expect a team that reflects Pirates’ traditions: disciplined, determined, and hungry for glory.
