Gauteng school fight: what sparked violence between Hoërskool Roodepoort and West Ridge learners?

School violence in Gauteng: Roodepoort principal injured during clash between pupils from rival schools.

The violent confrontation between Hoërskool Roodepoort and West Ridge High School learners stemmed from an earlier clash last Friday, which was captured on social media and quickly went viral.

While details remain under investigation, Gauteng Department of Education officials say the incident appears to have been a retaliation by West Ridge learners. Authorities are exploring whether underlying tensions, rivalries, or social media disputes contributed to the escalation.

MEC Matome Chiloane addressed the broader implications, warning learners and parents alike:

“It is completely unacceptable that such violence has spilled into our schools… Our schools must remain centres of safety, learning, and growth, not battlegrounds.”

Psychologists have warned that unchecked conflicts between learners can rapidly spiral into physical violence, especially when amplified online. Chiloane urged learners to resolve disputes peacefully and called on parents to play an active role in guiding their children.
