US warns citizens to avoid military, govt facilities in Abuja

The United States government has issued a fresh security advisory, urging its citizens in Nigeria to avoid visiting military and government facilities within Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

The advisory, released by the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria on June 23, 2025, comes amid growing concerns about global security threats and the need for heightened vigilance in strategic locations across the capital.

Although the embassy did not cite a specific threat or imminent attack, it noted that the advisory was a proactive response to increased security tensions worldwide.

American citizens living in or traveling to Abuja were strongly advised to avoid non-official visits to government buildings and military installations, and to maintain heightened situational awareness in public spaces, especially those popular with foreigners and expatriates.

The embassy emphasized that the safety of its citizens remained a top priority, urging them to stay alert in public, avoid large gatherings, and adopt measures to reduce predictability in their daily movements.

Citizens were also reminded to review their personal security plans and remain enrolled in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), a platform that ensures they receive the latest security updates and enables the U.S. government to reach them in times of crisis.
