Ben Shelton’s US Open Ends in Pain: Mannarino Advances After Shocking Retirement

Ben Shelton’s US Open campaign came to an abrupt end on Friday after the American star was forced to retire from his third-round clash with Adrian Mannarino due to a left shoulder injury.

Seeded sixth at this year’s tournament, Shelton—already a two-time Grand Slam semifinalist—looked in control after claiming the third set. However, his fortunes turned when he appeared to hurt himself while diving for a ball in the corner, landing heavily on his left arm on the final point of that set.

Not long into the fourth set, the 2023 US Open semifinalist was seen grimacing in pain and signaled concern to his coaching box, admitting: “I did something to my shoulder. I don’t know what it is.” Despite receiving on-court treatment and attempting to adapt his game by attacking the net to shorten rallies, the pain proved too much. After Mannarino leveled the match by taking the fourth set, Shelton consulted again with the trainer before deciding to withdraw.

The victory handed 37-year-old Mannarino a historic milestone—his first-ever win over a top-10 opponent in a Grand Slam tournament after 23 attempts. While the French veteran celebrated a breakthrough moment, Shelton now faces an anxious wait to assess the full extent of his shoulder injury.
