 UNN’s 50th matriculation: Matriculants express excitement amidst security concerns

Despite recent security concerns, matriculants at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) expressed excitement and pleasure during the institution’s 50th Matriculation ceremony on Saturday, July 27th.



In an interactive session with UCJ-UNN, freshmen shared their feelings of excitement and pleasure at gaining admission and matriculation. While acknowledging the security concerns, they praised the university for creating a conducive learning environment and promised to leverage it to achieve their goals.

Gloria Mbam from the Department of Public Administration and Local Government expressed her happiness, saying, “It’s a dream come true. I feel extremely happy and my parents and friends are here to celebrate with me.”

Other matriculants, including Chika Akabuike, Valentine Okoye, Chisom Onuoha, and Chiamaka Okafor, shared similar sentiments, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to study at UNN and commitment to making the most of it.



Valentine Okoye from PALG said, “I feel excited because I strived to get admission into this university, and I finally got it, so I’m very happy. It is a thing of joy. I almost lost hope because my name came out in the last list. I just feel the excitement. For the security issue, the Student Union Government (SUG) during our orientation promised that the security officers will put in more effort in making sure that students are safe and secure.”

“I thank God, this is a new beginning and I’m very happy. Though the academic calendar is short and rushed and also there is a change in curriculum for 100 level students, I will nevertheless work very hard to cope with it. But for now, I am just happy. On the security issues, I have taken precautions not to go out late in the night. Even if I do, I will come back early,” Chisom Onuoha from the Department of Mass Communication.

“I m happy, excited and lively yeah, I am. The environment is good, things are moving smoothly, it is just that sometimes we hear bad news like the case of the girl that was kidnapped, but thankfully rescued. Chiamaka Okafor from History and International studies.

Regarding security concerns, the matriculants acknowledged their fear but expressed confidence in the university’s efforts to ensure their safety. Some mentioned taking precautions, such as avoiding late-night outings, to stay safe.
