The Times Higher Education (THE) has released a full list of University rankings according to research and value-added knowledge in Nigeria.

The performance metrics used in the assessment of these universities are about eighteen (18) which include five key areas, such as teaching, research environment, research quality, industry, and international outlook.



This time around, some universities that appeared at the top list the last time couldn’t make it to the first ten, while some universities have continuously maintained their high level of excellence and secured themselves on top lists in the ranking.

According to PunchOnline, the 2025 list also reflected a shift in the global higher education landscape, with more than 134 million citations from 16.5 million research publications analyzed and survey responses from over 68,000 scholars collected globally.

Top 20 Universities in Nigeria

Covenant University tops the list again as the leading university in Nigeria. Located in Ota, Ogun State, the institution has continuously maintained it’s its level of research, innovation and excellence in learning and sustainability.



Ahmadu Bello University follows after as the second-best university in Nigeria. The Zaria University has proven itself as a reflection of scholarship and research in the North.

Landmark University secured the third position in this year’s University ranking. It’s deep research in agricultural development and sustainability. It is located in Omu-Aran, Kwara State.

The University of Ibadan was placed as the number 4th in Nigeria. The famous institution still retained its age-long tradition of excellence and academic prowess.

The University of Lagos takes a position as the fifth in Nigeria. Known for its vibrant environment and academic research, the celebrated Eko University has found itself among the best five institutions in Nigeria.
