Here are few things to know about the retired Naval, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, the Newly Appointed Administrator of Rivers State.
When people were already expecting an impeachment, while others thought a full-blown crisis would erupt, the federal government declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending the governor, deputy governor, and all state lawmakers for six months.
According to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who made the announcement March 18, 2025, this decision aims to restore peace and order in the state.
Here are key facts about the retired naval officer now leading Rivers State.
Background, Education, and Personal Life
The retired Naval was born on September 27, 1960, in Nko, Cross River State, Ibas began his military career at the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1979 and was commissioned as an officer in 1983.
He furthered his education at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, and the National Defence College in Islamabad, Pakistan, earning a master’s degree in defence and strategic studies from Quaid-i-Azam University.Beyond his professional career, Ibas is married to Barrister Theresa Ibas, and they have children and a grandchild.
Military and Leadership Career
Ibas has held several strategic positions in the Nigerian Navy, including:
Chief of Naval Staff (2015-2021), during this period, he Led initiatives to strengthen Nigeria’s maritime security.
As the Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command, he Oversaw naval operations in the western region.
He also served as the Chief of Administration and Navy Secretary during which he managed administrative and personnel functions.Post-Retirement and Diplomatic Role.
After retiring in 2021, Ibas was appointed as Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Ghana, where he worked to strengthen bilateral relations between the two nations.
With Rivers State now under federal control, Ibas’ extensive experience in security, governance, and diplomacy is expected to play a crucial role in stabilizing the region and ensuring smooth governance during the emergency period.
During the declaration, President Bola said that “ the new Administrator will not make any new laws. He will, however, be free to formulate regulations as may be found necessary to do his job, but such regulations will need to be considered and approved by the Federal Executive Council and promulgated by the President for the state.”
