A tragic incident at Dingamanzi Primary School in Giyani, Limpopo, has left 20 grade 3 learners injured after part of a classroom ceiling suddenly gave way.
The accident occurred on Tuesday shortly after pupils returned from their lunch break. Witnesses reported a loud crash as the ceiling boards came down on the class of 48 children.
Victor Mabunda, a staff member at the school, said quick action helped ensure all injured learners received urgent medical attention.
“We rushed them to the local clinic, and some had to be referred to hospital for further checks,” he explained.
Fortunately, none of the pupils sustained life-threatening injuries, and all have since been discharged.
In the aftermath, concerned parents have withdrawn their children and launched a protest, demanding mobile classrooms for their safety. They argue that the affected block had previously been deemed unsafe.
However, Limpopo education department spokesperson Mike Maringa refuted those claims, insisting the building was recently renovated.
“The block is less than six months old. It was never condemned. Learners were only moved there temporarily to allow ongoing construction on other blocks,” Maringa stated.
The department confirmed that a full investigation is under way involving the contractors, school governing body, and departmental officials to determine the cause of the collapse.
