Stephen Graham wins emmy for Netflix drama Adolescence, reflects on humble Kirkby roots

Stephen Graham has officially joined the ranks of Emmy winners, taking home Outstanding Lead Actor for his role in Netflix’s acclaimed drama Adolescence.

In an emotional acceptance speech at the Los Angeles ceremony, the 52-year-old actor paid tribute to his family and reflected on his journey from growing up in the flats of Kirkby to international recognition.

“I’m just a mixed-race kid from a block of flats in Kirkby,” Graham said. “This kind of thing doesn’t happen to someone like me. To be acknowledged here by my peers is the most humbling moment of my life—it proves that any dream is possible.”

In Adolescence, Graham plays Eddie Miller, the father of a teenage boy accused of murder. The series has been a massive success, winning six awards on the night, including a record-breaking win for 15-year-old Owen Cooper, who became the youngest male actor to ever receive an Emmy.

The Liverpool-born actor also expressed deep gratitude to his wife, Hannah Walters, and their children, calling Hannah his “rock” and “soulmate.” He credited his late father figure, affectionately known as Pops, for nurturing his love of film by taking him to the Quarry Green video shop during childhood.

Graham’s career spans decades, with breakout roles in This Is England and appearances across both British and American cinema. He has previously spoken about his struggles with mental health, openly sharing how the support of his family helped him through difficult times.

For fans, his Emmy win feels not only like recognition of his immense talent but also a celebration of resilience, heritage, and determination.
