Speed Darlington files ₦300m suit for unlawful detention amidst Burna Boy’s Saga
Nigerian rapper Speed Achakpo Darlington, popularly known as “Akpi,” has filed a N300m lawsuit against the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, over alleged unlawful detention.
According to Akpi’s lawyer, Speed Darlington was unlawfully detained by the police after the court had given an injunction for his release on Monday, 6th January, 2025.

What to know about the lawsuit
The lawsuit, as reported by NAN, sued the IG of police as the sole respondent in a suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1832/2024.
The suit contains a four-count order that urged the court to see Darlington’s arrest as a violation of his fundamental human rights according to the 1999 constitution.
The order also contained that the court should direct the IGP to immediately and unconditionally release Darlington from the detention.
Thirdly, the court should mandate the IGP to present Akpi before the court to enquire into the circumstances constituting grounds for his arrest and detention.
Also, that the order directing the respondent to pay the applicant the sum of N300,000,000.00 (Three Hundred Million Naira) only as general, exemplary, and aggravating damages for their unlawful and continued detention since 2024 till date.
About Darlington’s arrest
Akpi was arrested on 4th October, 2024, for alleged defamation and cyberstalking of popular Grammy winner Burna Boy.
He was later granted bail after spending some days in detention.
Later in November, 2024, he was rearrested by the police for allegedly jumping administrative bail. Till then, he has been in detention before the court ordered his immediate release on 6th January, 2025.
What’s on the ground?
The counsel representing the IG of police in law court pleaded for time to read the suit slammed against his plaintiff at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The judge in charge, Justice Musa Liman, has fixed 13th January for the hearing of Speed Darlington’s case to uphold the request of adjournment to enable the IGP’s lawyer, Garba Audu, to study and respond to the suit served on him in the court.
