South Africa’s Rulani Mokwena begins MC Alger reign with goalless derby draw

South African coach Rulani Mokwena

South African coach Rulani Mokwena has officially kicked off his tenure with Algerian champions MC Alger, settling for a goalless draw against fierce city rivals USM Alger in the opening round of the Algerian Ligue 1.

Mokwena, who succeeded Tunisian tactician Khaled Ben Yahia in July, is tasked with guiding MCA to success in the CAF Champions League, retaining their league crown, and chasing domestic cup glory.

Tough Start, Tough Circumstances

The derby clash ended 0–0, leaving the defending champions in mid-table after their opening fixture. Mokwena admitted that his side is still a work in progress, with pre-season setbacks affecting preparations. Injuries to key men such as Tayeb Meziani, along with several internationals returning late from national duty, disrupted team cohesion.

“It’s difficult to judge after just one game. We had limited preparation, but I saw encouraging signs in our spirit and mentality. The one person I wasn’t happy with today is myself – I feel I could have helped the team more.”

Eye on First Victory

The 38-year-old former Mamelodi Sundowns and Wydad Casablanca coach now turns his focus to MCA’s next clash against newly promoted Ben Aknoun on 4 September. A win would not only boost confidence but also mark Mokwena’s first triumph in Algeria.

Broader African Impact

While Mokwena adjusts to life in Algeria, other South African players and coaches impressed across Europe this weekend. Lyle Foster scored for Burnley against Manchester United in the Premier League, while Bradley Carnell’s coaching exploits continue to earn praise.
