Kaya 959 has placed radio personality Sol Phenduka on immediate suspension, citing an ongoing internal process. The announcement comes as a surprise to fans and listeners of the #SizTheWorld breakfast show, which he co-hosts with Sizwe Dhlomo.
In a brief statement on Wednesday, acting managing executive Dave Tiltmann said:
“Kaya 959 confirms that presenter Sol Phenduka has been placed on suspension with immediate effect. This step has been taken pending the outcome of an internal process currently under way. The station is committed to following due process, and no further details will be shared at this stage. Updates will be provided once the internal process has been concluded.”
Phenduka, a former Big Brother Mzansi contestant and co-host of the popular Podcast and Chill with MacG, joined Kaya 959 three years ago alongside seasoned radio host Dineo Ranaka, taking over the breakfast slot from Thomas Msengana and Skhumba Hlophe. After Ranaka’s departure in 2023, Phenduka continued the morning show with Dhlomo.
His early days on the station drew attention on social media, where some listeners jokingly referred to him as the “traffic guy” due to his limited airtime compared to Ranaka. Despite initial concerns, Phenduka reassured fans he would continue his podcast commitments alongside his radio career, stating in 2022:
“I will continue co-hosting Podcast and Chill with MacG as agreed with the Kaya959 management. This alone is a privilege, as it tells me that I am not being dictated to. I see this as a great start to a fulfilling career. I still see my time at the podcast as my career highlight.”
The sudden suspension comes as a shock, particularly given Phenduka’s confidence in balancing his media commitments. Speaking to DRUM Magazine previously, the former Big Brother Mzansi contestant dismissed concerns about potential conflicts between his podcast and radio responsibilities:
“I have been on the radio before and have lots of experience in the medium, and I believe there is still enough freedom for my personality to shine. I’ll be myself.”
Kaya 959 has requested patience from staff, listeners, and stakeholders during this period. “The station appreciates the understanding of its staff, listeners and stakeholders while this matter is being addressed,” the statement read.
Fans of Phenduka and the breakfast show are now waiting for updates, as the broadcaster’s future at Kaya 959 remains uncertain. The station has emphasised that it is committed to following proper procedural steps before announcing any final decision.
