Sinach faces N5bn lawsuit over alleged copyright infringement of Way Maker… Here’s all to know
Gospel artist Sinach is facing a N5 billion copyright infringement lawsuit filed by music producer Michael Oluwole, popularly known as Maye, over her 2016 hit song Way Maker.
The case, heard at the Federal High Court in Lagos, was however, adjourned until January 2025. Here’s all you need to know:
Details about the Case
Music producer, Oluwole alleged that he co-authored the globally acclaimed song and is seeking recognition as a co-owner.
The producer claimed that he contributed to the track by recording, mixing, mastering, and creating instrumental accompaniments, including piano, strings, and synthesizers. He accused Sinach of releasing the song without his consent or compensation and of failing to share revenue from licenses and copyright agreements.
In his suit, marked FHC/L/CS/402/2024, Oluwole asked the court to declare him a co-owner of the song and to mandate an equitable division of all revenue generated from its licensing and copyright assignments. He also requested a perpetual injunction to prevent Sinach from reproducing, distributing, or performing the song without his involvement.
Through his lawyer, Justin Ige, Oluwole further accused Sinach of failing in her legal obligation to formalise their working relationship with a written agreement. He described her actions as “oppressive” and says she has wrongfully profited from Way Maker while excluding him from the proceeds.
Sinach’s Defense
Sinach, born Osinachi Kalu, denies the allegations. Represented by Emeka Etiaba of Etiaba Chambers, the gospel singer maintains that she is the sole author of the song.

According to her, Way Maker was composed, arranged, and performed with other artists, such as Nwabude Chude Arinze, before Oluwole’s involvement.
She argued that Maye’s role was limited to mixing the master recording, a service for which he was paid $300. Sinach asserted that his contributions do not entitle him to performer’s rights, copyright, or royalties. She also denied any obligation to establish a written agreement with him.
Court Proceedings
The trial began on November 27, 2024, with the court hearing arguments from the prosecution. The defense is scheduled to present its case on January 29 and 30, 2025.
