Simon Ekpa, a controversial Finnish-Nigerian separatist agitator and self-proclaimed Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile, has been arrested in Finland on allegations of terrorism-related activities.

Ekpa, along with four other suspects, was apprehended earlier this week, sparking significant attention both locally and internationally. Here’s all you should know:

The Arrest

The Finnish Central Criminal Police confirmed that Ekpa was detained on charges of “public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent.” According to the Päijät-Häme District Court, Ekpa allegedly used his social media platforms to spread separatist propaganda and incite violence in southeastern Nigeria.

The other four suspects are accused of financing terrorist activities, with all five arrests occurring at the start of the week. International collaboration played a key role in the investigation, underscoring the global scope of the case.

What the Authorities are Saying

Detective Chief Inspector Otto Hiltunen of the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation stated that the investigation revolves around Ekpa, a Finnish citizen of Nigerian descent, who allegedly promoted violent activities against civilians and authorities in southeastern Nigeria.

The suspected offenses date back to August 2021, with evidence pointing to the use of social media as a tool for incitement. Ekpa’s controversial rhetoric, including his call for election boycotts and his approval of violence, has garnered millions of views on platforms like X (formerly Twitter).

Background on Simon Ekpa

Simon Ekpa is a staunch Biafran separatist and a self-proclaimed disciple of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Ekpa has been vocal about his demands for the secession of the southeastern region of Nigeria and the establishment of an independent Biafra Republic.

Based in Lahti, Finland, Ekpa identifies as a human rights activist, legal advisor, and politician. His public statements and activities have made him a polarising figure, with his rhetoric often leading to heightened tensions in Nigeria’s southeast.

Previous Run-ins with the Law

This is not the first time Ekpa has faced legal scrutiny. In 2023, Finnish authorities briefly detained him on suspicion of a money collection offense, though he was released the same evening. His political party in Finland, the National Coalition Party, has refrained from commenting on his current arrest or membership status.

International Reactions

Ekpa’s activities have long been a point of contention between Nigeria and Finland. Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa, previously accused Finland of providing protection to Ekpa, whose separatist rhetoric has allegedly incited violence in Nigeria. Calls for Ekpa’s arrest have persisted, with Nigerian officials urging diplomatic efforts to hold him accountable.

What Happens Next?

The Finnish authorities have made it clear that the pre-trial investigation and legal process could take years. For now, Ekpa and his alleged co-conspirators remain in custody as investigations continue.
