See how South Africans are mourning the death of Dr SD Gumbi

Dr SD Gumbi
The South African gospel and religious fraternity is in mourning following the passing of the beloved and iconic preacher, Dr Simon “SD” Gumbi, aged 66. Known for his signature phrase “U-Amen Usekhona?”, Dr Gumbi died on the evening of Monday, 14 July 2025, after a long illness.
A towering figure in spiritual life, Dr Gumbi touched millions of lives through his work as a preacher, teacher, broadcaster, and father figure. His profound voice and deeply spiritual messages on Ukhozi FM’s renowned Sunday night show Unkulunkulu Nomuntu Omusha made him a household name in the 1990s. From the pulpit to the airwaves, he inspired generations with his unwavering faith and heart-stirring sermons.
In recent years, Dr Gumbi battled significant health challenges, including being wheelchair-bound and the amputation of his leg. Despite these trials, he remained a pillar of strength and continued to minister with grace and resilience.
A Life Remembered
Dr Gumbi’s passing was confirmed in a heartfelt video posted by his family on his official Facebook page. His son, Pastor Nhlapo, emotionally announced:
“The general of our time, Dr Moyeni Simon Gumbi, has gone to be with the Lord. He fought a good fight. We thank God that he died in the Lord.”
The message urged South Africans to offer prayers and support during this period of bereavement, requesting respect and dignity for the Gumbi family in their time of sorrow.
Tributes from the Gospel Community
Gospel legend Sipho Makhabane, deeply affected by the news, paid tribute to his mentor and spiritual father:
“I’ve lost a father, a brother, and a mentor. uBaba Gumbi always made an effort to make someone’s life better. He contributed richly to our industry through singing, preaching and prayer.”
Rebecca Malope, affectionately known as the Queen of Gospel, shared:
“May his soul rest in peace. He was trusted by the Lord and fulfilled his duty. His suffering is over now, and the angels surely rejoice. It’s a great loss to the gospel fraternity at large.”
Pastor Jabu Hlongwane reflected on their last meeting at the funeral of Zanele Mbokazi:
“It felt like a farewell. He sang one last time, and we all joined him. It was beautiful. Who will be the father in our space now?”
A Nation Grieves
Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, Power FM personality and former EFF member, expressed his devastation on X (formerly Twitter):
“Death is so greedy. My heart is shattered. And yet, he would insist that he has gone to be with the Lord! May his loving wife, children, and the whole body of Christ be comforted. Usehambile u-Amen!“
