Eja Manifest Eji: President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State and suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and the state’s House of Assembly members, has sent shockwaves across Nigeria.

This drastic measure, announced in a nationwide broadcast, aims to address the prolonged political crisis in the state. However, it also raised concerns about the implications for democracy, governance, and the welfare of Rivers State’s citizens.

The unfolding crisis

The suspension of elected officials and the imposition of emergency rule evoke memories of Nigeria’s turbulent past. While the president’s intention may be to restore order, this move risks exacerbating the crisis. The opposition has already cried foul, alleging that the president’s action was politically motivated.

Averting danger and crisis

To prevent further escalation and ensure a peaceful resolution, several steps can be taken:

  • Establish an Independent Inquiry: Set up a neutral investigation panel to probe the underlying causes of the crisis in Rivers State. This will help identify the root causes and recommend sustainable solutions.
  • Engage Stakeholders: Foster dialogue between the federal government, Rivers State officials, and other stakeholders to find common ground and work towards a peaceful resolution.
  • Respect the Rule of Law: Ensure that all actions taken during the state of emergency comply with the Nigerian Constitution and international human rights standards.
  • Address Underlying Issues: Implement measures to address the socio-economic challenges facing Rivers State, such as poverty, unemployment, and infrastructure deficits.
  • Restore Democratic Governance: Once the crisis is resolved, ensure the prompt restoration of democratic governance in Rivers State, with elected officials returned to their posts.

By adopting these measures, Nigeria can navigate this challenging situation, uphold democratic principles, and prevent further instability.
