Television presenter and bestselling author Richard Osman has announced he is stepping down from the BBC quiz show Richard Osman’s House of Games after an “amazing nine years.”

The 55-year-old host confirmed the news on his podcast, The Rest is Entertainment, revealing he will record one final week before officially handing over to a new presenter.

“It will no longer be Richard Osman’s House of Games. It will be somebody else’s House of Games,” he said. “I gladly hand over the keys.”

The BBC has confirmed the show will continue, but the identity of the new host remains under wraps.

Why Is Richard Osman Leaving House of Games?

Osman explained that the decision comes as he balances his growing writing career with television commitments.

Since the show launched in 2017, he has filmed more than 800 episodes, making it one of BBC Two’s most consistent weekday hits. The current ninth series reportedly attracts around 1.6 million viewers per episode across live and catch-up viewing.

“There comes a point where you have to hand it over,” Osman said, noting that while he loves hosting, it’s time for someone else to take the reins.

His departure mirrors his earlier exit from Pointless, which he co-hosted alongside Alexander Armstrong for over a decade before stepping away in 2022.

BBC Confirms Show Will Continue With New Host

In an official statement, Rob Unsworth, the BBC’s Head of Daytime and Early Peak Commissioning, praised Osman’s contribution.

“Richard Osman has established House of Games as one of our best-loved shows. His contribution to its success is impossible to overstate,” he said, adding that viewers will soon learn who the next “resident” host will be.

The BBC confirmed that production will continue beyond Osman’s departure, ensuring the popular general knowledge format remains part of its weekday schedule.

From Quiz Show Star to Bestselling Author

While Osman is widely recognised for his television work, his literary career has skyrocketed in recent years.

He is the creator of The Thursday Murder Club, a bestselling crime series that became a global phenomenon. The first novel was adapted into a Netflix film starring Hellen Miren and Pierce Brosnan, further cementing his cross-industry success.

Osman has frequently spoken about the demands of writing multiple novels while maintaining a high-profile television schedule. His decision to leave House of Games appears to reflect a desire to focus more heavily on writing and other creative ventures.

Personal Milestones Linked to the Show

Osman also revealed that the quiz show holds special personal significance. He met his wife, actress and comedian Ingrid Oliver, when she appeared as a contestant in 2022.

“I’ve loved it. And of course I met my wife through it as well,” he said, describing his time on the programme as deeply meaningful.

In a separate Instagram post, Osman thanked viewers for their support, calling the past nine years an “amazing” journey.

What Happens Next for House of Games?

Osman confirmed he will film one final week, during which he will symbolically pass the baton to the new presenter.

Although speculation is mounting online about potential replacements, the BBC has yet to announce who will take over hosting duties.

The programme’s format, four celebrities competing in daily quiz rounds across a week, remains unchanged. Industry observers expect the transition to be closely watched by loyal viewers who have grown accustomed to Osman’s dry wit and towering presence behind the podium.
