Primedia pays tribute to EWN’s Tshidi Madia

South Africa mourns the loss of one of its most respected political journalists. Tshidi Madia, Associate Editor: Politics at Eyewitness News (EWN), passed away in hospital on Wednesday morning, 27 August 2025, following a brief illness.

EWN’s Editor-in-Chief, Nisa Allie, paid tribute, saying, “Tshidi was the jewel in EWN’s crown. She was fearless, dedicated, and a consummate professional. Her tireless pursuit of the truth set an example for everyone around her. She nurtured and mentored many young political journalists, creating a formidable politics team and delivering exclusive stories with humility and precision.”

Allie added, “Tshidi’s laughter and spirited debates will be sorely missed. Beyond her public persona, she was fiercely loyal to her family and friends, living with passion and integrity in every aspect of her life. The sun shines differently without you today, Matshidiso. Our thoughts and prayers are with her father, siblings, nephews, nieces, and extended family.”

Mzo Jojwana, Chief Content Officer at Primedia Broadcasting, reflected on her impact: “We have lost one of the most trusted voices in South African journalism. Tshidi had a unique ability to engage politicians across the spectrum, asking tough questions while remaining professional and respectful. She guided audiences through the complexities of political events with clarity and empathy.”

Primedia Group CEO, Jonathan Procter, said, “Tshidi was a rare force in journalism. She was highly respected by politicians and peers alike, with an extensive network of contacts she had cultivated over the years. Her distinctive style allowed her to hold those in power to account while maintaining charm and professionalism.”

Madia’s career began at EWN’s traffic desk, followed by reporting and presenting roles at Power FM and News24. She later returned to EWN as senior political reporter before being promoted to Associate Editor: Politics. She also hosted the widely listened-to podcast Politricking with Tshidi Madia, where she interviewed South Africa’s key political figures.

Her reporting included securing a one-on-one interview with President Cyril Ramaphosa before the 2024 elections and engaging former President Jacob Zuma at Nkandla. She also reported from Washington DC during a White House meeting between Ramaphosa and Donald Trump.

In a family statement, Madia’s loved ones said, “She loved South Africa deeply and devoted her career to telling its stories. She brought joy and love to all who knew her, and her memory will forever remain in our hearts.” Funeral arrangements will be shared in due course.
