The New England Patriots have traded wide receiver Ja’Lynn Polk and a 2028 seventh-round draft pick to the New Orleans Saints in exchange for a 2027 sixth-round pick.
Polk, the Patriots’ 2024 second-round pick (37th overall), struggled with injuries and limited production. He’s currently on season-ending injured reserve due to a shoulder ailment, meaning he won’t play for the Saints until the 2026 season.
Polk’s Rookie Year: Expectations vs. Reality
When Ja’Lynn Polk was drafted, expectations were high. He came out of the University of Washington, where he had shown skill, speed, and playmaking ability.
However, his rookie season results were underwhelming: 15 games, 12 receptions for 87 yards, and 2 touchdowns. Competition in the Patriots’ receiver room and his shoulder injury impeded his ability to make a bigger impact.

Why the Trade Now? Injuries, Roster Competition, and Draft Moves
Polk’s injuries have been a major factor. After offseason shoulder surgery and a re-injury during preseason, he was placed on injured reserve again before the 2025 season started. This made it difficult for him to prove himself in camp.
In addition, the Patriots have added multiple receivers and reshaped their depth chart, increasing the competition. That likely made Polk’s spot less secure going forward.
What Saints and Polk Hope To Gain
For the Saints, this trade is a low-risk purchase with potential upside. They are getting Polk, who still has rookie contract time left, plus enough draft compensation (a 7th in ’28 traded for a 6th in ’27) to make it appealing.
Polk will have a chance at a fresh start in New Orleans, where he can recover fully, adapt to a new system, and aim to live up to his draft pedigree. His health and readiness will be key.
What This Means for the Patriots
New England clearing Ja’Lynn Polk from their roster gives them flexibility in the receiver room and allows them to shift resources. The trade also means the Patriots relinquish some of their investment, but gain a higher draft pick for the future.
Polk’s departure reduces one of the 2024 draft class members still on the roster. It underscores the high stakes and short leashes for second-round picks who don’t quickly meet expectations.
