Overcoming adversity: The inspiring story of Monday Idowu
By Idowu Omowunmi
Monday Idowu’s ever cheerful face reflect his remarkable resilience. Born in Badagry, Nigeria, in the 1980s with Down syndrome, Monday faced isolation and stigma, depriving him of educational opportunities. While his siblings and peers attended school, Monday watched longingly.
His parents sought resources and support, but options were scarce. “Those were difficult times,” his mother recalls. “We wished for more awareness and understanding. Maybe then, Monday would’ve received the education and care he deserved.”
As Monday transitioned into adulthood, isolation intensified. Inaccessible infrastructure and lack of inclusivity turned simple tasks into daunting challenges. Yet, Monday persevered, finding solace in vibrant artwork that showcased his untapped potential.
Individuals like Monday face numerous challenges. Inaccessible public spaces, limited education and employment opportunities, social isolation, inadequate healthcare and lack of representation exacerbate their struggles.

Government and non-governmental organisations can enhance support by implementing accessible infrastructure, providing inclusive education and vocational training, enacting disability-friendly hiring policies, establishing specialised healthcare services and promoting awareness campaigns to challenge stigma. This comprehensive approach ensures equal opportunities, dignity and participation.
