Oba Olakulehin passes aged 90

Ibadanland has been thrown into mourning as the Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olalere Olakulehin, passed away at age 90—just a day after marking his birthday.

The 43rd Olubadan died in the early hours of July 7, 2025, ending a short but impactful reign that began in July 2024. His death comes barely 48 hours after well-wishers across Nigeria celebrated his 90th birthday.

Olubadan of Ibadanland’s Final Hours

Born on July 5, 1935, Oba Olakulehin’s milestone birthday was celebrated with tributes from President Bola Tinubu, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, and other traditional leaders. His sudden death shocked many who just celebrated his longevity and leadership.

Sources close to the Olubadan-in-Council confirmed the monarch passed peacefully at his residence, with family and aides present. Traditional mourning rites have begun across Ibadanland.

From Okugbaja to the Throne: A Storied Rise

Oba Olakulehin hailed from the Okugbaja family in Ibadan North-East. His journey to the throne followed Ibadan’s unique succession structure, where ascension is based on seniority and service through the military and civic chieftaincy lines.

He was a former Balogun of Ibadanland before his coronation as Olubadan on July 12, 2024, succeeding the late Oba Lekan Balogun.

A Monarch of Peace and Tradition

Though his reign lasted less than a year, Oba Olakulehin was widely respected for promoting peace, Yoruba culture, and unity in Ibadan. He often encouraged traditional values while supporting urban development under Governor Makinde’s administration.

His reign symbolized a bridge between history and modern governance, as he sought to foster generational harmony within the ancient city.

Nationwide Tributes Pour In for Oba Olakulehin

Condolences flooded in from leaders across Nigeria. President Tinubu described the late monarch as “a custodian of heritage and peace.” Governor Makinde expressed deep sorrow, praising Olakulehin’s contribution to the socio-political development of Oyo State.

Traditional rulers from across Yorubaland also mourned the revered monarch, describing his loss as a significant moment in Yoruba history.

Ibadan Prepares for Succession

Following Ibadan’s rotational chieftaincy tradition, succession now passes to the next senior chief in the alternate line. The Olubadan-in-Council will begin the official process of selecting the next monarch in the coming weeks.

Funeral plans are expected to be announced soon, with state involvement likely due to the significance of the Olubadan stool.

Legacy of Oba Olakulehin

Oba Olakulehin will be remembered for his humility, wisdom, and commitment to cultural preservation. His story serves as an inspiration to Ibadan sons and daughters navigating the traditional chieftaincy ladder.

Though brief, his reign left a lasting impact on the people of Ibadan and Yoruba heritage at large.

More details to follow as official funeral arrangements and succession announcements are made public.
