Obasa impeached, Meranda takes over… what to know about Lagos Assembly saga
The Lagos State House of Assembly of 32 members has impeached Mudashiru Obasa, the speaker of the House.
This People’s Gazette reports that Obasa was impeached over cross misconduct and financial incompetence as a withdrawal of N43.5 billion for backup vehicles for lawmakers, as well as other controversial activities were recorded under his auspices.
Mr. Obasa, though in Atlanta when he was impeached, has pleaded not guilty to charges upon investigations with EFCC.

However, Sahara reports have revealed various shady dealings of Obasa and alleged that he has several assets across Lagos. In corroboration to this, the Gazette had earlier reported that Obasa diverts funds meant for the development of Lagos into his personal pocket, a real debt to his tenure as a speaker.
Overtime, several charges of fraud and thuggery has been labelled against Obasa in the past.
Who is Mudashiru Obasa?
Mr. Obasa is a 52-year-old man who first came into the Assembly in 2013 and was elected Speaker on June 8, 2015, alongside former governor Akinwunmi Ambode. Since then, he has held the position to date.
Obasa represented the Agege Constituency 1 in Lagos State. He is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and has been influential in Lagos politics, playing key roles in legislative matters within the state.
Obasa is being accused of spending N17 billion on a gate to the assembly complex, which critics argue is excessive and fraudulent. There have also been allegations of mishandling constituency funds and projects.
Currently, he has been replaced by his deputy, Lasbat Meranda.
What to know about Lasbat Meranda
Mojisola Lasbat Meranda is the current Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. She succeeded Mudashiru Obasa, who was impeached due to several allegations of misconduct, including corruption and mismanagement.
Lsbat was born on 16th August1980 into a strong political homes. Her late father, Chief T.A. Lawal Akapo, was a legislator who later became the Ojora of Lagos.
She obtained a degree in public administration from Lagos State University and has represented Apapa 1 constituency since 2025.
Lasbat Meranda has been noted for her leadership within the Assembly, where she has worked to advance legislative processes. Her prominent rise is a significant political development in Lagos as she becomes one of the few women to hold such a high political office in Nigeria, especially in the male-dominated environment of state legislatures.
In this historic moment, Mojisola Lasbat Miranda is the first female speaker of the House of Assembly ever in the South- West region and Lagos specifically. She has equally been sworn in as she promised to be committed to discharge her duties with diligence and due commitment to the state in her oath of office.
As it stands now, all eyes are on her to take key measures and decisions that will positively impact laws and state affairs of Lagos State.
